Walter Reed Eagle Courtyard Project

The Garden Club of Chevy Chase is proudly leading an effort to renovate and landscape the Walter Reed Eagle Courtyard, located on the Walter Reed Medical Center campus.

See our Powerpoint presentation here.

Walter Reed Medical Center, based in Bethesda, Maryland, serves 150,000 active duty and retired military members and their families annually.  It provides medical service to our nation's wounded warriors, the President, members of Congress, and the Supreme Court.

The Eagle Courtyard is located between the Eagle and Arrowhead Buildings, where 16,000 inpatients are treated each year.  The courtyard is the only green space visible to the patients, the family members, and the medical staff.  It should be a place of respite, and yet it is less than inviting - it is a concrete canyon.

Inspired by one of our members whose father was being treated in that complex, The Club has adopted the courtyard in an effort to provide a healing garden for our wounded warriors.

Acclaimed landscape architect Thomas Woltz of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects has agreed to work hand-in-hand with The Club to redesign, rebuild, and replant the courtyard. Woltz has won praise for his designs of the Flight 93 National Memorial, Shanksville, PA; the Public Square and Gardens at Hudson Yards, NY, NY; and Houston's Memorial Park among others.

The effort will cost approximately $325,000.
