National Activities and Outreach

  • As a Zone VI member of the GCA, we participate in workshops and national/regional conferences that encourage greater knowledge and love of gardening while raising awareness and taking steps to conserve, restore and protect the environment. We participate annually in the Capitol Hill-based GCA National Affairs and Legislation Meetings to follow legislative issues and advocate for GCA positions through meetings with our elected representatives.

  • In association with National Capital Area Garden Clubs, we participate in the holiday decoration of Strathmore Hall, an important cultural venue in Bethesda, Maryland.

  • We help to spearhead outreach efforts of the U.S. National Arboretum, a vital national resource for gardeners everywhere.  We also provide financial support for the Arboretum’s work to restore polluted streams within their grounds.

  • We participate in and lend financial support to the GCA’s Scholarship programs for deserving recipients.

Projects in our local community

  • Betty English Garden, an award-winning design of a public green space on Brookville Road, Chevy Chase.  The Garden is named for one of our earliest members.

  • Western Grove Park, in conjunction with Montgomery County, Chevy Chase Village and other community organizations, we support the conservation and enhancement of a new, public green space at the edge of our urban neighborhood.

  • Friends of Chevy Chase Circle is partially supported through our club’s donations.

  • Chevy Chase Village Hall  We provide the materials and decorate annually for the Community Holiday party.

  • National Center for Women and Families creates healthy living environments for vulnerable children, youth and families. Every Christmas, we donate to the Center gifts of toys and clothes for the children and much needed toiletries and bedding for their parents.  We also trim the Center for the December holidays, balancing the designs to be inclusive of all faiths.

  • Friendship Terrace Retirement Community provides low-income assisted-living for the elderly.  We host educational seminars on flower arranging and photography, while providing food and companionship at lively events.

  • For over 20 years, we designed and maintained plantings at the entrance to the Chevy Chase Library.
